magazine project

This is the front cover my magazine that we constructed during lesson. I was influenced to begin with by many popular magazines such as "ZOO" and "NUTS", but decided to make the cover less nude, and yet keep the basic, in your face attitude that they used. I also took some influence from gaming magazines, the main one being "ONM" (official Nintendo magazine), I used a technique that they had used which was to have a big picture of the main image and to have also in your face descriptions of what is in the magazine. This then bought me to the conclusion that most magazines do this. So, knowing this I chose my style for the front, which was to have an "ex" student who made it big. The character also has a big smile on his face and has a speech bubble with the words "What?!?! Did you say this mag was free", this will hopefully make the student reader see that a famous figure is impressed by the magazine being free as it's so good. I thought this would be good as nearly every magazine has someone famous on them. Then I thought to make the magazine more homely to the students, I'll add a picture of the college in the background. I got influence of this idea when I was searching for college magazines on Google, there was a magazine with the college in the background tinted a different colour. I thought the tinting idea was good as it made the character still stand out, but you still noticed that the magazine was part of the college. With this in mind, I decided on an orange tint to the background to give it a softer colour than the picture but to also make it speak out loud and clear. I then added some short snappy lines that would hopefully attract the student; I used words such as "exclusive" and "sex", which relate to modern teenage life. I also added a stroke effect around the words to add emphasis and to also make them readable and stand out; the stroke technique was done with contrasting colours (black and white). I also then added something onto the magazine for free as most magazines do, I decided upon having a free iTunes download as downloading music is a popular past time and Itunes is everyones favourite.

This is my contents page to my magazine, I chose to keep the same background on this as I did with the front cover, except I zoomed in a bit on students which were blocked by the main picture on the front cover. I thought that having this would make the students see that it’s not just the college that is in the magazine but also the unexpected students, this would make them feel that the magazine relates to them more than they expected. I also added a skyline to the content, "welcome to the contents", I thought that this would be better than just having contents as it would make the student reading it feel more calm and it not being all about work, this is because the word "welcome" makes a person more relaxed, rather than getting straight to the point. I also added two pictures to the contents, I did this because I thought that any more pictures would be to over powering and put you off seeing what’s inside, it would also make the magazine messy and a student wouldn't like that. The two pictures that I used where of fellow students, the two males in the top left picture are meant to resemble the band "this guy" who have returned to there college for an interview; the other picture is of two girls, one of whom is pregnant and depressed while the other is happy and not. I thought this necessary because on the front cover I have small line saying "how to have fun in bed and not get pregnant"; I also added a quote from each girl underneath so that it makes the reader want to read it, also for a student, this is quite an important aspect in their life (avoiding pregnancy). The quotes underneath the two girls attract the reader as it basically makes them believe that if they don't read what the magazine has to say then they will get pregnant. I also used the same stroke technique as I did on my front cover, this was so the contents stays at the same level as the cover does, this is also helped by the tinted picture of the college, which instead of being orange is green. I also added emphasis onto the pictures surroundings; this is so the reader is dragged into looking at them and then turning to the page which is printed next to the pictures. I then added one final part tot he magazine which was "and all the normal student tips and Ad's", this is so the student still know that the magazine is normal and not just teaching and strict.
